"Things I Never Told U," an
outdoor, sing-along musical featuring live songs by Rick
Berlin and the Shelley Winters Project to be presented by
the Invisible Cities Group May 17 and 18 on Aberdeen Rd. in
Somerville
Featuring 13 songs by Rick Berlin, performed live by his
rock band the Shelley Winters Project, "Things I Never Told
U" invites the audience to take part in an outdoor,
sing-along musical by the Invisible Cities Group.
Set on Aberdeen Road in Somerville near Davis Square, the
musical follows the story of George, a 19-year-old kid who's
going nowhere fast, and how his neighborhood bands together
to save him.
Adapted from Bernard Malamud's short story "A Summer's
Reading," the script evokes nostalgia for a time when
everybody on their street knew each other. In the Invisible
Cities Group version, we watch George simultaneously at the
ages of 12, 19 and 48 try to figure out his life. Rick
Berlin, as the older George, acts as the narrator.
"For the audience, watching the play and singing along,"
says Lesley Bannatyne, co-creator, "it will be like being in
the middle of a movie, with scenes happening up and down the
street, in front yards, and on porches." A cast of 30,
playing neighbors, will make Aberdeen Road come alive with
all-singing, all-dancing production numbers. From their
vantage point on a corner, spectators will get a
street's-eye-view of the action.
Installations by Somerville artists Molly Van Nice and
Robert Goss (also a co-creator) will add to the
neighborhood's visual richness.
Playing twice only on Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May
18, at 7 pm, the event is family-friendly. Aberdeen Road is
one block from the corner of Highland Ave. and Cedar St., a
10-minute walk from Davis Square. Tickets are $12
advance/$15 at the door, with children 12 and under 1/2
price, and are available at McIntyre & Moore Booksellers
in Davis Sq. For more info call (617) 628-1021 or email
icg@gate.net.
Seating is limited and advance tickets are encouraged.
Bring lawnchairs or a blanket for seating. In case of
rain, call or go to the web site.
"Things I Never Told U" is presented by the
Somerville-based Invisible Cities Group, a consortium of
visual and performing artists founded in 1994 by codirectors
Lesley Bannatyne, Gary Duehr and Robert Goss. ICG's mission
is to create large-scale outdoor events in which the
spectator is the center of the action. This is the group's
seventh original performance. Past performances include
"Impossible Library," "Watching the Detectives," and "Dream
House."
Things I Never Told U is produced by Studebaker Theater
and supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), a
state agency, and by a grant from the Somerville Arts
Council, a city agency supported by the MCC.
